An Update…
And Some Insight.
I’ve been spending time these last couple of weeks trying to relax and get some perspective. I’ve been going through my reserve reading list, pruning my read backlog. I have to say, the vast majority of what’s published here is NOT worth my time. Obvious click-bait aside, some articles you would think might be good have a decent set-up but then just fall flat, making them impossible to finish. And some perspectives are just insanely naive and one dimensional where the problems of today are concerned. It can be really mind-numbing reading how so many of us just miss the target on so many things, where more complex thinking is required...
So I am definitely going to be a lot more selective about the things I read on Medium, avoiding the ‘suggestions’ as much as possible. If we are going to build a better world, one basic thing everyone needs to do is move away from algorithms and how they affect our lives. For me, that involves an active choice of quality over quantity. Some writers have a well-developed sensibility, and some merely stab naively at the beast that is the modern human condition, affecting nothing substantial in the process. So unless I get a sense that a writer has a mature understanding and perspective, I am just not going to bother.
I’m also going to limit what it is I choose to write about. For instance, I’m an anti-consumerist…
