I don't know how pertinent it is to this essay, but I think trying to define Muslims in Western terms like moderate or liberal or conservative isn't the best way to go about it. I prefer how Ayaan Hirsi Ali separates Muslims in this video with Maajid Nawaz, grouping them as the 'Mecca' type, focused on preaching and outreach, or the 'Medina' type, focused on violence and organized military subjugation. Just my opinion though.
