I’ve loathed the idea of New Years Resolutions for many, many years. In fact, I can’t recall a time in my adult life when I ever took the idea seriously. Based on what I had observed in my younger years before the emergence of my NYRs discontent, to declare a resolution openly was merely a performative action meant to signal to those in earshot that you were heads above the fray, because it was understood that a resolution meant you were going to take action. And as social media helped multiply those within earshot, it really became a badge of honor to declare a resolution, to virtue signal that you were a better person for declaring intent.

Most resolutions fail miserably though, for one reason or another. Humans, being what they are, have an almost unerring knack for focusing on short-term gains, and resting on their laurels in the face of short-term success, rather than looking to any meaningful long-term change in habits or lifestyle. Diet is always the big one. We always say we’re going to try and cut out the things the medical establishment says aren’t good for us. It used to be fat, then it was sugar, then it was carbs in general, now it’s salt… Salt is everywhere though…in EV-ER-Y-Thing… And since humans are very hedonistic…
