It's a sad fact of the human condition that people who see clearly the problems within our species, and who point them out in order to help elevate everyone, get treated this way.

There's a psychosocial model called 'Crab Mentality' which explains this in some detail. Look it up on Wikipedia.

It's proper, of course, to reject opposing political views, as you point out, when said views border on the inhumane. That's why the 'both sides' argument is so distasteful, particularly here in the States. The dividing line between left and right has been manipulated so far to the right that overt racists are now actively emboldened to try and normalize their behavior. That is wholly unacceptable by any standard and no one has the right to suggest that decent people should accept others who would be so inhuman as a matter of course.

What's really messed up, here at least, is that so many of these people who call for this type of contrition are right wing christians who would never consider accepting someone of radically opposing beliefs. This is why the pro choice faction here is under such threat.

So yeah, until fervent right-wingers are willing to be reasonable, they have no right to demand respect when calling for their version of civility.
