It's pretty (not) funny that for being so progressive in their art before the Meiji Period, strangeness accepted, they wound up going so far backward mentally as to fetishize everything from public humiliation of women to soiled underwear to violent tenticle rape, the latter being the twisted descendant of Hokusai's work of course.
It's some beautiful work. Sadly, not every society progresses in an affirmative direction, if this period of Japanese art is any indication.
