Welcome to Vol. 1 of my new project — And Now For Something Completely…Last Week. Yes, I’m borrowing from Monty Python and John Oliver on that one, but it’s merely an homage so get over it. That said, I’m going to periodically, usually on Sundays, make the effort to respond to the human idiocy I see around me by making observations on the human condition as filtered through the lens of a few select news items from the preceding week. I intend to be uncomplimentary at times because I hope this makes people uncomfortable enough to be aware of the indignities being forced on our society at the present moment, enough to maybe start doing something tangible to change the prevailing social winds so that a more progressive cultural ship can sail on, free of regressive influences.
On to the headlines.
I saw it coming…
Activists are opportunists, no question. They feed on outrage and use that nourishment to bite back against what they see as injustice, whether real or (in many cases) imagined. On the flip side of that coin, activists are also trolls to a certain degree. They work to disrupt the prevailing assumptions of the zeitgeist by needling the people who perpetuate said assumptions. The only difference between good activists and bad activists, however, is the righteousness of their cause.
Most trolls do what they do for the sake of personal amusement. This is why I don’t like them. They have nothing more worthwhile to do with their lives than abuse the systems of informational power laid out before them. The only acceptable activists, as far as I’m concerned, are the ones who are actually working to validate the human condition and bring about a reasonable state of balance where it concerns the human equation.
