Also, kindercide is a fairly common thing in certain primate communities. Humans in general probably don't have the stomach to be reminded that they have anything in common with a similar species where dominant females kill the children of rivals.
Plus, there are a fair number of competent periodicals on offer, like NatGeo, which do a decent job of promoting the natural world.
