Most people are lazy and don't really take the time to comprehend what the First Amendment really means. It was established, almost as an afterthought, to ensure that the government could not interfere in the private religious matters of the citizenry, impose a religious ideal on the governed. It was never intended as a backdoor mechanism to impose Evangelical beliefs on the people of this nation.
