Some have said recently that a certain celebrity (who shall remain unnamed) would do well to leave certain unfiltered bikini pictures circulating on the internet as a counter-punch to the constant ‘airbrushing’ of female beauty, which has been polluting and distorting the definition of the feminine ideal in the human zeitgeist for decades now. This presents a false dichotomy in that what these people fail to understand is that, airbrushed or not, this celebrity (and others like her) represents a massive part of a problem which has only been exacerbated by the information age, that being the assumption that extreme beauty is a significant measure of worth.

From a biological stand-point, the presentation of ideal traits is often a method to ensure quality offspring, which, given the harsh survival rate for most animals in nature, is a wise strategy. The stronger the offspring an organism breeds, the more likely the continuance of a given genetic legacy; hence, successful breeding in nature is often determined by ideal traits. Humans, however, are not bound by the strictures of nature in this regard. We have science at our disposal to inform us on the best strategies to ensure a continued genetic legacy.
