One could claim authorship if one programmed the AI generator and then entered a prompt, I suppose. As I understand things, it has been established that programming code in novel forms is akin to creative works, in that it can be reserved for exclusive use by a human entity or conglomerate. There world still be too much removal of art from artist in my mind, however.

The real problem for me isn't that something new has been achieved, but that AI will give those people even less cause to care who already disregard artists as frivolous entities. They can just get their art from a machine and cut the cost of human labor out of the equation. That, for me, is the real tragedy... cutting the soul out of your acquisitions simply because it costs less. Art is really only meaningful when you know there's a piece of a person embedded in it. I doubt AI will ever be able to contribute to art on that level.
