Regardless of specific reasons for self-harm, science is now able to show that mental illness is a result of structural abnormalities in the brain. People can have all the success in the world, yet still feel empty, struggling to make sense of why they can't sustain good feelings. And it's all because of biological deficiency. I myself have created some excellent works of art, by all accounts, but it's very difficult to feel good about that given my decades of struggle with chronic depression and an untreadable sleep disorder.
