Speaking as someone who has lived with chronic depression for years, there is no wishing away or 'praying your way' out of mental illness, and vague promises of love and hope on the horizon aren't going to do anything for someone who feels so empty that suicide seems like an attractive option.

Happy happy joy joys aren't the answer. If you want to be useful to people suffering deeply, take the time to learn about what is going on inside their head and act on that. And I don't mean learn what they are thinking. Learn about the biological malfunctions in the brain which cause mental illness in the first place.
