I’m not usually one for messing about with popular culture and the like, beyond entertainment value that is. However, humans are simple creatures and pop-culture gets the clicks. So here I go with a little bit of pointless fanboy speculation on two different sectors of popular culture — Star Wars and Red Dwarf.

Now, if you aren’t a fanboy (and let’s be fair, who in their right mind would want to be) you should know that we nerds have an almost universal tendency to make pointless mountains out of non-existent molehills by trying to explain away meaningless details in our favorite entertainments. It could be production continuity errors like why a modern coffee cup appears in a scene from an episode of GoT or a simple character alteration, like why Data used contractions early in the run of Star Trek TNG but was explicitly state to be unable to do so later on in the narrative. Or it could be a pointless discussion on character strengths and weaknesses, such as who would win in a fight in the back seat of a Prius — Wolverine or Elongated Man.

In any event, if we had our faculties about us, we’d be creating our own pop-culture phenomenon and not merely talking about the work of others. On with the geekery…
