Let’s talk about the pros and cons of digital media for a moment

I’ll start off on a positive note and say that I’m so happy Liz Phair has returned to the music scene after so many years by dropping in our laps her new release Soberish. As soon as I found it was available, I committed to buying the CD and, just the other day, took the bus across town, to one of the only retail outlets left in the area selling new physical media and bought the thing. There aren’t many artists for whom I will make the effort to buy new, at full retail price, but Liz is one of them. I’ve been with her, musically speaking, off and on since high school and she rarely disappoints.

I’ve only listened to Soberish once thus far but I’m intrigued by the mix of styles she’s employed and the low-key execution of some of the songs on offer. Musically, it evokes pretty much every era of her decades-long career, offers a decent helping of something new and is every bit the enjoyable listen.

What’s more, the packaging is fucking awesome! I don’t know who it is that conceived of the overall packaging layout of Soberish, but my hat is off to this master of the graphic design…
