There is a kind of duality at play, for me anyway. They have amusing forms but the eyes add a slightly horrifying element, given how void they are of expression in some cases. Limitations of the medium, I suppose. It's possible this is the same aesthetic side effect where by clowns are meant to be amusing but can disturb some people as well.
