This is not a universal absolute. The 'hellfire and brimstone' image of the afterlife is largely a co-opted tenet of christianity by later adherents to that faith, thanks in large part to writers like Dante and Milton and other artists who took their cues from the popular culture of their day.
There is a documentary from the BBC which touches on, to a degree, this type of doctrinal appropriation, which is called 'How the Devil got His Horns' if you care to review it.
