This statement needs serious revision. Modern Humans did not emerge until about 300,000 years ago. If any species of 'Great Ape' prior to that emergence is to be considered 'human' then the distinction needs to be made that these people were 'archaic' humans, thus susceptible to different social and biological circumstances from we modern humans.

Furthermore, there is no sound, concrete basis to say that what was true for any higher species of 'Great Ape' two million years ago is true today. We can study other primates for tangential clues in the now, but we don't have a complete picture of what exactly day to day cognition was like for earlier forms of 'Homo' and can not reasonably compare with any certainty their biological and mental proclivities with our own. We can't even say with any certainty whether or not they had language, so how they expressed themselves is a guess at best.
