Well, I’ve finally finished Monstrous by Carlyn Beccia despite having had it out from the library for several weeks now. That’s what chronic mental illness does to you, though. It makes even seemingly simple tasks, like reading an illustrated 140+ page book geared toward older children, out to be difficult tasks. There were times I could read whole sections, and times when I had to put the book down after reading a few sentences. The brain is a mysterious organ. Thankfully, science is doing a better job these days of revealing the mysteries of the brain, just as Carlyn has done a decent job of revealing the mysteries (and absurdities) behind some of popular culture’s biggest icons.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the more interesting parts.
